Portage Health Foundation - The Portage Health Foundation (PHF) was first established on November 19, 1990 with the purpose of supporting charitable and philanthropic activities within the Portage Health Hospital system. The PHF provided a pathway for community support and donations to flow into the hospital and supported its many healthcare delivery offerings. Over the next twenty years the PHF supported several key capital purchase initiatives at Portage Health hospital, including contributions to the Dialysis unit, Oncology, Audiology, Community Health and Wellness, Cardiology, Diagnostics and Imaging, and Rehab services. These capital contributions strengthened the hospital system's ability to meet the health needs of the community.
In December 2013, majority ownership of Portage Health hospital was acquired by LifePoint Hospitals. This change in ownership and the resulting joint venture partnership caused Portage Health to convert from a non-profit community-owned healthcare organization to a for-profit corporation. As such, the PHF was converted from a hospital foundation to a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with the purpose of supporting the charitable health needs of the community and surrounding four-county area -- Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw & Ontonagon counties.
Proceeds resulting from the sale of Portage Health to LifePoint Hospitals were provided to the PHF for the purpose of reinvestment and charitable grants to benefit the health of the community. The asset base of the PHF has grown considerably and has been invested for the perpetual benefit of the community. A portion of the earnings each year are reinvested back into the community as the PHF strives to fulfill its mission.
The Portage Health Foundation believes in the power of community partnership to meet the charitable needs of its citizens. Furthermore, it recognizes the important role that is played by individual donors, collaborators, and the people and organizations that provide services. It is through this collaboration that, together, we are able to overcome the challenges experienced in many facets of our community and make it a healthier place for everyone.
