Kerredge Gallery - New watercolors by Madhura Mehendale  June 5 – 29, 2019
HANCOCK, MI – The new exhibition in the Copper Country Community Arts Center’s Kerredge Gallery is watercolors by Madhura Mehendale. The Houghton artist has been living in and painting the beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula since 2012. She also teaches watercolor and acrylic painting classes at the CCCAC.
Madhura’s subject matter includes familiar local landscapes and architecture as well as flowers and birds. She works primarily in transparent watercolor in traditional watercolor style using washes and glazes. About her painting process, she says, “For me, a painting begins with a broad idea of colors and composition. I start out with a wet on wet wash allowing rich colors to flow, merge and bleed, working from light to dark.  But it is the fluid and unpredictable nature of watercolor resulting in surprising colors and textures that guides the final painting often leaving me in awe and amazement.”
The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, June 14 6:00-8:00 pm where Madhura will give a watercolor demonstration. Refreshments will be served. The exhibition runs through June 29 and is supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 10-6 and Saturdays 10-2. The CCCAC is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock.
