Military Veteran Hockey Game Comes to Houghton!
HOUGHTON, MI – Come out and support the Michigan UP Veterans Hockey Club February 22, 2020 at the Dee Stadium as they play the Saginaw Spirit Warriors to raise money for the DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans. These two teams are made up of United States Veterans using their love of hockey to raise awareness and support for their fellow veterans. This is the second game of a two-game series between the two teams and all players have served our country. The Michigan UP Veterans Hockey Club is comprised of veterans from across the Upper Peninsula – from Houghton to Marquette and as far over as St. Ignace. This is an amazing collective of what our veteran community across the UP.
Admission is $5 but children under 12, all active duty and veterans, and public service professionals can get in free. MI Works!, Department of Health and Human Services, DJ Jacobetti Home for Veterans, Escanaba -Veterans Center, Michigan Army National Guard, and the Houghton-Keweenaw County Department of Veterans Affairs Service Office will be available at the game to provide resources and service options for those with Veterans Administration benefits questions, needing mental health support, employment options, and others.
The Michigan UP Veterans Hockey Club is made up of veterans across the Upper Peninsula ranging from Houghton all the way across to the Sault Ste Marie. Their intent in creating this team is to give veterans an opportunity to play hockey, socialize with their fellow veterans, and help support services and resources that support veterans. “When veterans leave the service, they often miss the camaraderie, the sense of belonging to something bigger and the direction (mission) to serve/help both their Country as well as their fellow brothers and sisters-in-arms,” said Jon French, SFC (ret) Jon French, Michigan UP Veterans Hockey. “The Michigan UP Veterans Hockey Club helps fill these voids and provides an opportunity for veterans across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to continue to serve with something else we’re very passionate about -ice hockey. Even after military service has ended, veterans still have a lot to offer.”
These teams provide connection, the chance to play the sport they love, and support one another. “The City of Houghton is proud to host this event at the Dee and we look forward to a great game,” said Eric Waara, Houghton City Manager. This event is going to bring our community today to support our veterans.
