    Job Description
    The search for the next Innovate Marquette SmartZone Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is underway. Due to a planned retirement, we seek an experienced executive to join and lead our team in Marquette, Michigan
    The ideal candidate is an entrepreneur at heart. Your passion for the Marquette area, eagerness to help innovators, entrepreneurs, and inventors bring ideas to market by creating tech start-ups, new jobs, launching product ideas and helping small businesses start and grow will be key to your success. The CEO will further develop and execute the organization’s strategic plan, financially manage all aspects of the organization and provide leadership to a small management team, outside consultants and other strategic partners to deliver on both the near-term and long-term mission driven goals and objectives of the organization.

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Entrepreneurship, Engineering or the equivalent combination of education and related experience/training in an entrepreneurial start-up, a university technology transfer office, or a technology-based business as an executive or start-up founder is required.
    • 10 years experience in a senior leadership role with profit & loss responsibility in a commercial entity, governmental department or non-profit required; an industry-related economic development organization a plus.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of tech start-ups and/or small business creation and product development, angel funding, venture-capital funding and early-stage venture and technology assessment.
    • Experience operating a business consulting company or tech incubator/accelerator would be beneficial.
    • Ability to lead, manage, coach and mentor an organization via its staff, teams and clients. Experience managing a diverse team of college students providing services to inventors/entrepreneurs is a plus.
    • Ability to create and present communication materials/messaging and serve as the leader and face of the organization to funders, stakeholders, community members, government officials, strategic partners, its board of directors and others in an effective manner that establishes sound working relationships and delivers desired results.
    • Understanding and applying marketing principals including social media and promotional campaign strategies through different channels and platforms.
    • Facility/site management experience a bonus (i.e. negotiate contracts, rental/tenant rates, services).
    • Willingness and ability to travel (mostly in lower Michigan) at least 20% of time required.
    • Willingness and ability to relocate to the Marquette, Michigan area is required.
